Competence in English
All overseas doctors must prove that they have an adequate
standard of English before the General Medical Council (GMC)
can give full or limited registration. In order to make sure
the standard is the same for all overseas doctors, the GMC
asks for a satisfactory score in the International English
Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations.
The IELTS examinations consist of four sections: reading, writing,
listening and speaking and the GMC sets minimum scores for each
section and a minimum overall score. There are IELTS examination
centres and preparation courses in many countries. You can get
further details from British Council offices in the UK or overseas.
